Makerspace Design
The items in the Makerspace are not intended to always stay in the Makerspace, but are to be brought back to classrooms, used for learning and creating, and brought back so that other students can learn and create with them too. Quite likely, this will require some kind of sign-out form so that we know where supplies can be found if they disappear.
In the planning of the Makerspace, there are a couple things that have been considered:
Why Make? To create! To have hands on creative experience. To foster collaboration and critical thinking. To use as a platform for learning skills of all kinds. Beyond the material and a space, Making is a Mindset, and will not be effective, productive, or successful if the mindset is not there.

The Makerspace will require approximately $2000 each year in order to keep it replenished, and additional funds if there would be the addition of supplies.
I have intentionally chosen items that foster student creativity. These items can all be used in a variety of ways for a variety of different activities. Other neat thing that I would be interested in having in a Makerspace would be:
Donations of recycled/gently used supplies from parents/community/staff members may be requested on an as-needed basis.

Conclusion
In order for any Makerspace to be successful, both students and teachers need to embrace a Maker Mentality, and see value in the experience of making. In choosing Making Supplies, I have tried to keep the Grade 5-8 curriculum in mind. When teachers are thinking of Making, I encourage them to look at the 6C's (Character, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Citizenship) and look at Making through that lens rather than the lens of the curriculum SLOs. Our Manitoba Report Card, as well as our 'Cluster 0 SLOs' include so many things that can and will be accomplished in Making.
